Built in 1822 under Emperor Minh Mang, Son Tay Citadel is a 16-hectare military fortress.
The citadel features a distinct Vauban architectural style and a 1,300-meter outer perimeter. It is constructed entirely from local laterite stone. Visitors can walk the historical grounds without paying an entry fee.
Most visitors combine this stop with a trip to Duong Lam Ancient Village. Both sites are about 45 to 50 kilometers from central Hanoi, taking roughly 1.5 hours to drive.

This 18-meter-tall octagonal observation post stands in the center of the citadel. Guards once used it to transmit emergency warnings and time announcements. Take photos from the base, but do not climb on the fragile walls.

This structure served as the central rest house for the king during his inspection tours and prayers. You can observe the restored traditional architecture. It functions as a royal spiritual site.

The outer defensive perimeter features surviving brick gates, stone bridges, and a 20-meter-wide moat. Walk along the remaining laterite walls. Massive ancient trees surround the path to provide shade.

This pedestrian zone surrounds the citadel and hosts cultural and entertainment activities. The street is only active on weekends. Visit on a Saturday evening to see the highest level of activity.
